This artwork was made in association with the 2024 GB Pixelart Jam.

the theme was "Colour", so I settled on the idea of a sunset, and used Palette 3 "Homework" (https://lospec.com/palette-list/homework)

I had originally intended our main character to present more lonely, or melancholic, imagining them watching the last sunset before school term starts, or perhaps before moving away, This also helped inform the choice of palette colours, blue, greys and black for a more muted, withdrawn type of look. This isn't so surprising however, Anatomy and posing has never been my strong suit, even if I could utilise one of the most important parts of a character's expression- the face.

Additionally, in future I'd've made the main floor much, much less noisy than it actually is, as it feels like it detracts from the main focus of the scene- our heroine and the bay she's looking out over. I'd also originally intended to feature godrays blooming from the edges of many things, however even this image used 188 unique tiles of the alotted 192, so perhaps this slightly simpler work was actually practical. I used the long shadows to try and sell that instead, which I feel really rather elevates the feeling of lighting in a way that isn't all that usual for a Game boy game. Originally I had used block-black shadows rather than the black-with-highlights that I ended up using, but I do feel like it does contribute to the floor tiles' noisiness.

One thing I do really feel proud of however, is the use of the white and grey to make the grass for the hill she's standing on. I'm definitely gonna carry that trick forwards into the future!
